Course outline:

This practical course explores the ethical requirements applying to UK statutory auditors and how they influence decisions throughout an audit engagement. It considers the FRC Ethical Standard alongside the ICAEW and ACCA Codes of Ethics, focusing on independence, professional judgement and the recognition and management of ethical threats.

Ethical challenges are not limited to client acceptance or formal independence declarations. Commercial pressure, long-standing relationships, gifts and hospitality, additional services and the use of emerging technologies can all create difficulties in everyday audit practice. Through realistic scenarios, the course considers how auditors should identify threats, assess their significance, respond appropriately and document defensible conclusions.

Learning outcomes
  • Recognise ethical and independence threats arising during statutory audit engagements.
  • Apply the fundamental principles and relevant FRC Ethical Standard requirements to practical situations.
  • Evaluate appropriate responses, including safeguards, consultation, documentation and circumstances where work must be declined.

  • Introduction – Why ethics, independence and public confidence matter to audit quality.
  • The Ethical Framework – The five fundamental principles and the relationship between professional codes and audit-specific requirements.
  • Applying Ethics in Practice – Self-interest, self-review, advocacy, familiarity and intimidation threats; professional judgement, safeguards and ethical drift.
