Our one day Farming conference has been specifically designed for partners and managers with responsibility for a number of farming clients. It is a specialist conference looking at a wide range of practical issues which will enable those attending to provide the best possible advice to their clients.

David Missen

We know that there will be structural changes in the industry over the next decade, and we fear changes to the capital tax regime. Is this the time to hand over the reins?

David looks at the background to succession planning, the process of stepping away, the tools we can use, and case studies illustrating what can go right...or wrong.


Pat Nown

Pat will consider the tax implications arising in the succession planning scenarios/case studies identified in David’s session. Scope will include both income and capital tax considerations. Specifically, the following will be included:

  • tax implications of changing business structures
  • the availability of IHT Business and Agricultural Property Reliefs
  • mitigating CGT on business and asset transfers
  • the role of trusts in succession planning

An opportunity to hear from a farmer about current issues and how accountants can really add value to their clients.


David Missen

Why are farm accounts special? What can go wrong and what happens if it does?

David looks at ten common danger areas (with practical examples!) and five techniques to mitigate the risk.

Pat Nown

In this session Pat will consider a selection of key tax issues currently of relevance to farmers in their personal and business capacity. COVID 19 for example, has affected different agricultural sectors in different ways, adding to the tax advisory minefield. The following will specifically be included:

  • tax considerations for the ‘ups and downs’ of COVID 19 including loss aspects and the tax treatment of COVID 19 grants
  • the impact of changes to Entrepreneurs’ Relief 
  • making the most of Structures and Buildings allowances
  • the future of CGT and IHT
  • any other new announcements or developments

Conference speakers


Richard is a Partner and Head of Business Research at the Andersons Centre. He is a qualified Chartered Surveyor and Agricultural Valuer.


Jeremy is Secretary and Adviser to the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers and an independent adviser.


Neil Owen

Neil Owen is an independent consultant, speaker and occasional writer. He has specialised exclusively in VAT since 1984, when he joined HM Customs and Excise as a VAT officer. He entered professional practice in 1990, working for regional accountancy firms in the Thames Valley and Solent areas, before establishing his own VAT consultancy practice in 2007.

Neil has taken a close interest in VAT for academies for over ten years and continues to advise a number of clients in the sector, mainly MATs, on a regular basis


Pat joined Mercia in 2008 as a tax consultant lecturer bringing a wealth of experience with her. She originally trained and worked in the profession for Ernst & Young, Grant Thornton and KPMG before moving to the University of Derby as their senior tax lecturer. Her time at Derby included undergraduate and professional tax training as well as being involved in examinations and publishing projects for ACCA and other professional bodies.

This led to a ten year period with the Financial Training Company now Kaplan where she was Tax Product Director for the Midlands as well as becoming well known as a prominent exam based tax lecturer. She was also involved during this time with significant publishing projects for the company and other professional bodies.

Over her career Pat has been actively involved in the tax professional bodies including serving as a Council member for 12 years for the Association of Taxation Technicians.


Having previously been a Partner within a regional firm of chartered accountants, David is now an independent consultant. He is an agriculture subject matter expert for the ICAEW farming community and also writes assignments and lectures for firms within the sector. He has his own small farm which he has expanded with a mixture of arable, solar and stewardship areas.
